“I love to witness how things age in the garden, how the tone of a flower changes in the days, how they become more soft and graceful and somehow feels more intimate.”
The home of La Musa de las Flores’ garden hasn’t always been an easy process, with failure helping shape the cultivation. Valle de Bravo is high in the mountains, and the year has only two seasons, rain and drought. This led Gabriela to grow everything under greenhouses to avoid the heavy downpours that hit for six months of the year.
However, now full of annuals and some perennials –dahlias thrive here– and this small garden supplies all the plants she needs for her floral studio. Gabriela loves all the late summer flowers, from cosmos, zinnias, celosias, dahlias, scabiosa, full of texture and effortless style.
The more Gabriela grows, the more convinced she is that as a floral designer, you benefit tremendously from growing your own — watching them talk to each other as they develop. Being patient and learning to let go are vital lessons of a garden.
The seasons guide the flower selection and how they will shape the blooms that will adorn her design work. As growing her own garden is a constant source of inspiration for her designs, Gabriela is excited to offer online classes to share her knowledge and inspiring her students to think holistically about design from nature — from starting small, growing in pots on the patio into a full La Musa de las Flores garden.
